Pension Education Programme

The Pensions Education Programme is a QED initiative which, by means of a two-year campaign, aims to increase financial awareness among members of the South Asian community in the UK - particularly in the Yorkshire region - so as to help them make better plans for their retirement.

QED is working with five community-based partners who are members of the Community Economic Partnership to raise awareness of the importance of saving for the future among people who are employed or self employed. The programme specifically targets those who work in the community and voluntary sector as well as those employed or self-employed in Asian businesses.

Key elements of the programme are:

  • A short DVD to highlight the importance of saving for the future. The DVD is being shown at Community Awareness Seminars which more than 500 people are expected to attend by December 2007. Each participant receives a copy of the DVD which is dubbed in 5 languages (Urdu, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi and Punjabi) and recipients are encouraged to show the DVD to others and to family and friends. Over 1,000 British South Asians will get the message! You can watch the English language version of the DVD here if you wish.

  • The Seminars are being organised, mainly in Yorkshire, with the support of five community partners - the Pakistani-Kashmir United Forum, the Shantona Womens Centre (Leeds), the United Multicultural Centre (Rotherham), the Pakistani Muslim Centre (Sheffield), and the Sangat Centre (Keighley) - and Clough and Co, professional pensions advisors. There is a target population of almost 400,000 people of South Asian origin in the Yorkshire region.

  • Some 250 people will be given one-to-one information.
