Bradford Communities Unite To Celebrate Diversity Across the Region

In a celebration of community cohesion within Bradford, the first 'Unity in Diversity' event will be held this week (Friday 16th May and Saturday 17th May) at Bradford City Stadium.

The event, led by Quest for Economic Development (QED), has been organised to recognise and celebrate the achievements of Bradford’s wealth of diverse communities.

Open free to the public on Saturday from 2.00pm, the day offers a variety of amusements for all the family including live entertainment from Sunrise radio to face painting and Mela - a south Asian cultural event, bringing people of all backgrounds together to enjoy food, music and arts from all origins.

At 3.00pm sponsors of the event, Bradford and Bingley, will kick off celebrations with a football match between employees and the wider Bradford community including players of South Asian, Dominican, UK and Eastern European origins, to raise awareness of diversity and harmony in the area.

Paul Mitchell, Community Affairs Manager of Bradford & Bingley says, "Bradford and Bingley are delighted to be supporting the Unity in Diversity event. We have been working with QED for a number of years and like them we see sports, in particular this football event, as a great way of enhancing community cohesion within the Bradford area."

Celebrity Shobna Gulati, former Coronation Street actress, will officially launch the first 'Unity in Diversity' event on Friday by hosting an invite only evening of key speakers including Gerry Sutcliff MP, Chief Executive of Bradford Council, Tony Reeves and Director Julia Unwin CBE of The Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

Mohammed Ali OBE, Chief Executive of QED-UK comments, "We are proud to be launching the first 'Unity in Diversity' event in celebration of the wide ranging communities living and working side by side in Bradford. Our aim is to make people aware of the good relations and community cohesion that is apparent in the area."

The event forms part of QED's 'Making a New Life' project, an action based research programme funded by The Joseph Rowntree Foundation which aims to assist and improve the integration of new arrivals from Eastern European communities to the Bradford district. During the two day event there will be a wide range of information available for migrants coming to the city.
