QED-UK picks up top national award

Charity Awards 2005QED-UK, based in Bradford, has won one of the most prestigious accolades to be awarded in the charity sector at the Charity Awards 2005. The charity, which works to research, develop and run projects that address the root causes of poverty and disadvantages amongst some sections of British South Asian Communities, picked up the coveted award in the Research, Advice and Support category at a glittering award ceremony in London, on Thursday 16th June.

The ceremony, the sixth annual Charity Awards event to take place, is the only national awards scheme in the UK to recognise excellence in the management of charities, acknowledging the outstanding work and achievements of charities from across the UK and the tireless commitment of the people behind them. Ian Hislop, Baroness Betty Boothroyd, Zoe Wanamaker and Sophie Raworth were amongst an impressive line up of celebrities attending the event to present awards in 10 separate categories. Other winners included Coram Family, Macmillan Caner Relief, RYA Sailability and Beatbullying who picked up the top award of the night for Overall Excellence in Charity Management.

Aimed at highlighting the management achievements of charities to help spread good practice throughout the sector, the award was presented to QED-UK for the excellent work it has undertaken through its New Arrivals Integration Programme (NAP), a response to meet the social and employment needs of Bradford's new immigrants coming mainly from Asia. The Charity Awards judges were looking for examples of excellence from which other organisations can learn. They felt that the difference QED-UK has made in this area was especially deserving of that recognition.

"As the role of the voluntary sector grows in importance, particularly its increasing role in the provision of public services, it is vital that charities work together to maximise this effect. We have worked hard this year to recognise and reward charities that have forged creative and collaborative working partnerships that have an exponential effect on the success of their campaign. QED-UK is a fantastic organisation, the award is thoroughly deserved and we're delighted to congratulate them on their achievements."

The Charity Awards programme is organised by Charity Finance magazine, the leading business publication for the voluntary sector. As well as 10 category awards the judges awarded a special award for Outstanding Achievement in the charity sector to Stuart Etherington, Chief Executive of NCVO (The National Council for Voluntary Organisations)
